General Information Scope warns cuts will further marginalise disabled people

SOURCE Guardian News and Media Limited by Randeep Ramesh, social affairs editor

Charity says coalition plans could push already 'invisible' group deeper into social exclusion

Share

A charity has warned that government spending cuts could leave disabled people on the "fringes of society" after its research revealed that many people with disabilities remain hidden in everyday life.

Scope, which campaigns for disabled people in general and those with cerebral palsy in particular, said 91% of people it polled believed disability should not mean fewer opportunities. However, almost the same proportion had never had a disabled person to their house for a social occasion, and only around 20% had had the chance to work with a disabled colleague.

The charity became concerned about the impact of cuts after analysis of the coalition government's emergency budget by the Institute of Fiscal Studies showed that...

General Information Dare to Ask: Any way to know if cart users ever fake disability?

Source Jacksonville.com by Phillip Milano

Share

Question

What I just experienced at the grocery store infuriated me. Three women — a teenager, an elderly woman and a middle-aged woman — were shopping together. The teenager was riding a motorized cart for handicapped customers. After checking out, the teenager jumped off the cart and all three walked out laughing their butts off. I can understand teenage immaturity, but what about the others? What can managers and customers do? — Shirley, 50, St. Louis

Replies

Are you sure the teen didn’t have a disability? My 22-year-old niece has a medical issue that makes it impossible for her to walk more than 10 to 15 minutes. She doesn’t look disabled and can walk fine, but unless you knew her you wouldn’t think she had an issue. — M., female, Georgia

As a handicapped shopper, I know ...

General Information Jennifer Aniston criticized for using R-word

SOURCE Cleveland Live

Share

Jennifer Aniston is being criticized for an off-the-cuff remark on Thursday's "Live! With Regis and Kelly."

Aniston, there to promote her new film "The Switch," was talking with host Regis Philbin and a guest co-host, L.A. radio personality Kristin Cruz, about the actress's recent Barbra Streisand-inspired photo spread in Harper's Bazaar.

"You're playing dress up!" Philbin remarked. Aniston replied, "Yes, I play dress up! I do it for a living, like a retard!"

Criticism followed quickly on Twitter, and from disabled-advocacy groups.

"Frankly, someone in her position ought to know better," Peter Berns, chief executive of The Arc, told Us magazine. "She is using language that is offensive to a large segment of the population in this country. We estimate that there are probably in excess of 5 million people in the country with intellectual disabilities, and when you think about all of them, their family members and friends, you're talking about tens of millions of people who find the use of that term to be really offensive."

The Special Olympics issued a statement saying...

General Information New York schools shun special needs kids

SOURCE THE JEWISH CHRONICLE ONLINE By Paul Berger

Share

Manhattan offers the Jewish parent everything: gleaming community centres, world-class Jewish day schools, and a synagogue on just about every corner. But when it comes to raising children with special needs, New York's glitziest borough is, apparently, lacking.

One recent Monday evening, about 150 people crowded into the basement of Congregation Shearith Israel, on Central Park West, to discuss "The Jewish Community's Obligation to Special Needs Children."

The imposing synagogue is home to the oldest congregation in America. The previous day, Irish President Mary McAleese had stopped by to thank its members for their predecessors' generosity during the Great Famine of 1845-1852.

However, this particular evening there was little cause for self-congratulation as a...

Schofield church reaches out with shorter, more interactive format

SCHOFIELD -- Paying attention in church is difficult for many people. For those with cognitive or developmental disabilities, it can be nearly impossible.

Such was the case for Angie Melvin of Wausau until she attended a Worship at the Cross simplified church service at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schofield. The Rev. Ryan Wolfe of St. Peter Lutheran Church said the Christian-based message is delivered in a shorter, more simplified format, with more participation and interaction than a traditional service.

"It is very easy for me to understand. I get a lot out of being a part of it," said Melvin, who is a client of Opportunity Inc., which offers support assistance for adults with disabilities.

That's what Katie Hoenecke, 20, hoped for when she...
