Blind Awareness Americans Fear Blindness More Than Heart Disease Survey Finds

SOURCE The BAT Channel

Share

Most Americans fear blindness more than getting heart disease, the primary killer of both men and women in the United States, according to the findings of the “Eye on Eyesight” survey.

The “Eye on Eyesight” survey confirms that a significant fear exists when it comes to losing one’s eyesight, as 60 percent of Americans say they are more frightened by the prospect of going blind than of getting heart disease. The survey was conducted by Surge Research Inc. on behalf of Choice Magazine Listening, a...

Blind Awareness Inaccessible Electronic Book Reader Is Discrimination

SOURCE DBTAC-Great Lakes ADA Center

Department of Justice/Department of Education Joint Letter re: Electronic Book Readers

The US Department of Justice, Office of Civil Rights and the US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights have issued a joint letter regarding the use of electronic book readers. The letter outlines the issues related to emerging technologies and ensuring equal access to individuals with disabilities. The letter specifically states "Requiring use of an emerging technology in a classroom environment when the technology is inaccessible to an entire population of individuals with disabilities- individuals with visual disabilities- is discrimination prohibited by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) unless those individuals are provided accommodations or modifications that permit them to receive all the educational benefits provided by the technology in an equally effective and equally integrated manner."   Blind Awareness Blind Students Get Free Access to Cambridge U. Press Books

SOURCE email

Texts for visually impaired college students are hard to come by. But a new agreement between Cambridge University Press and Bookshare, a non-profit organization that converts books and journals into formats that blind people can read, may enlarge this library.

And in the U.S., it won't cost students a cent.

Bookshare, which already has digital-copy sharing agreements with 11 colleges and universities as well as the open-access textbook publisher Flatworld Knowledge, gets digital files from the publishers and converts them to files that can be read using text-to-speech software or Braille embossers.

Blind Awareness Blind Man Shares 9/11 Survival Story

SOURCE Central Florida News 13 Reported by Dave D’Marko

link for video at end of story

ORLANDO -- Like everyone who was inside the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, Michael Hingson has quite a story.

But Hingson can't describe what he saw the tragic day because he’s blind.

He was on the 78th floor of the north tower when the first plane hit just above.

"For the 13 months I ran office for Quantum, it was on my mind every day how I would react and work in an emergency," Hingson said.

Hingson's office was filled with visitors that day, so he...

Blind Awareness Bank of America Completes Installation of Talking ATMs

SOURCE Bank of America press release

Maintains Leadership Role in Services for Visually Impaired Customers

Charlotte (March 31, 2010)– As part of its long-standing commitment to customers with visual impairments, Bank of America today announced that every Bank of America ATM in the country has been equipped with voice-enabled technology. Visually impaired customers can now access more than 18,000 Bank of America ATMs, the largest network of bank-owned ATMs in the U.S.

Talking ATMs provide audible instructions in English or Spanish to persons who cannot view information on an ATM screen. These machines make it easier for people with visual impairments to withdraw cash, deposit money and perform other ATM transactions. The ATMs have audio jacks that deliver spoken instructions privately through standard headsets to protect the security of users who are blind or have low-vision.

"Bank of America has long been a leader in understanding the needs of blind and low-vision banking customers. From talking ATMs, to accessible online banking, to Braille bank statements, we are proud to have partnered with Bank of America for almost 15 years."
— Jeff Thom, president of the California Council of the Blind, an affiliate of the Arlington, Virginia-based American Council of the Blind

In 2001, Bank of America was the first bank....

Blind Awareness Seeking Students for Research Study

Students who are between the ages of 16 and 22 years who are braille readers and users of assistive technology are needed for a study. This study will explore how you use both braille and electronic information for classroom work, and how you learned these literacy practices. The purpose of this research will be to add to our understanding of the current role of both hard-copy (paper) braille and use of electronic access to information by people who are blind from ages 16-22, and your attitudes and perceptions about both braille and technology. This information will inform how we prepare pre-service teachers to instruct young braille readers.

If you are interested in participating in this study or getting more information, please contact Frances Mary D'Andrea at:
5513 Posvar Hall
University of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh PA 15260
412-521-5797

1. between the ages of 16-22
2. a student enrolled in school
3. a braille reader
4. a user of electronic assistive technology devices, hardware, or software.
If you are under 18, your parents will also receive a consent form that must be signed before you can participate.
